Confirmed from Rocky Top Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hiking trail through forest and by a lake offering scenic views.
What runners say about Rocky Top Trail
“The scenery is beautiful and it is well worth the 90-120 minutes it takes to do the loop.”
“Short trail is mostly shade except the Rocky top part, when its hot I do that part first which trail head is at the corner of drive in, across from play area.”
“Well maintained and easy to follow.”
“These spots offer killer views of the Lake of the Ozarks—perfect for snapping some photos or just taking a break to soak in the peace and quiet of the surrounding nature.”
Rocky top is the closest nice trail to our home. So we walk it almost every month. This is quite a beautiful and quiet hike. The full trail is about 2.2 mi, according to All Trails. The terrain isn't particularly rugged. I would say that the highlight is the overlook, maybe 30 ft above the lake.
Rocky Top Trail at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri is a real treat for those who love to hit the trails. This roughly 2-mile hike is just the right blend of challenge and fun for both newbies and seasoned hikers.
Our first Lake of the Ozarks hike. We completed it with our 7 year old. It is quite rocky and there are a few areas with moderately steep inclines and declines. We loved the hike, our daughter did trip a couple times though.
This trail is my favorite type of trail. The name of the trail clues you in a bit, but to make it clearer it is very rocky. I only did the easy loop since I did not have enough time to do more, but it was still a lot of fun. The top of the hill is magnificent as well as the crossroad to the longer section.
Trail conditions & character
“Pretty much lakeside the whole way through and the views were nice 👌 True to its name, expect a lot of small rocks under your feet lol.”
“Short trail is mostly shade except the Rocky top part, when its hot I do that part first which trail head is at the corner of drive in, across from play area.”
“Amazing trail, several lake overlooks, great birdwatching, fantastic rocks, and overall a great hiking trail with some minor elevation.”
“There is only one loop if you stay on the trail, you will go down hill and up some hills, and the grass will likely brush over you.”
“we found this place based on a google search and saw that it was dog friendly, which was huge since we had our 2 dogs with us.”

“There's a short section that runs out and back that takes you from the parking lot to the loop.”
“Nice hike, wear good footwear as flip flops or light sneakers will not cut it.”
“There are plenty of spots to step onto, avoid slipping, maneuver around things, etc, which is no problem, but it's mostly flat and easy to hike.”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
