Confirmed from Rothrock State Forest's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Rothrock State Forest
“It’s a scenic beauty but the downfall is that you’re not allowed to go up the little flat fire tower.”
“This is a great low incline trail running about 8 miles along a ridge on Tussey Mt.”
“So, if you want a rather easy hike on top of the mountain with some awesome near 360 views, silence, and few people, check out Tussey Mt Trail.”
This review is for the Tussey Mt Trail. This is a great low incline trail running about 8 miles along a ridge on Tussey Mt. It offers phenomenal views on both sides of the mountain. The trail is rocky and narrow, and in some areas, the ledge is next to you, so watch your step.
If I had to name one place that always feels like home, this is the place. Tons of great trails and niches to explore that are well-traveled and maintained. Definitely recommend picking up a Purple Lizard Map if you plan on doing some exploring... it has all the trails (and cool secrets) that you need to navigate.
Such a great place to spend a beautiful weekend. There are so many trails to choose from for whatever type of hike you're looking for. The Mid State Trail is clearly marked and well cared for, if pretty Rocky at points.
Tons of great trails for hiking and mountain biking exist in this forest. There are trails for all levels. Want an easy stroll along a stream? It is there. Want some elevation gain thrown in? You got it. Want to scramble up slippery moss covered rocks to hike along a ridge? Have it your way.

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
