Confirmed from Sanctuary Woods Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Sanctuary Woods Preserve

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (354 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 11 mentions

“Beautiful park, limited parking, the only reason I didn't give 5 stars though - is this limb hanging over the trail feels a lot like a game of chicken.”

🏃 great for running 2 mentions

“I love this little gem! You can run/walk up the dune (up the stairs), along the ridge, and back down.”

Beautiful trail. On 66th just south of 32nd. There is limited parking. Bike rack and portable bathroom on site. Picnic tables. Dog friendly. The path is very clean, but there are a lot of stairs to the back part of the trail. Worth the effort to see the wilderness.

Great hiking and walking. Would reccommend going in the winter as well because the view is much better without leaves obstructing the view.

★★★★★ — Jp , May 2024

Gorgeous preserve. Good walking shoes and water are nice to take along. We went on a slightly chilly day but I imagine bug spray is usually needed. Do not skip leg day if you want to straight thru the staircase.

★★★★★ — Sarai , May 2023

Great hike in the park. Stairs are challenging, but they have benches to rest along the way if needed. There is plenty of wildlife and views to see once at the top.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 21 mentions

“The coolest part was the wooden trails slightly above the path, making the views even better because you could see the top of the trees at some points.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.

  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.

  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
