Confirmed from Sand Ladder's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Beachfront hiking trail with a steep, rustic stairway offers sweeping views of the ocean & bridge.
What runners say about Sand Ladder
“It's beautiful and clean but you need a chunk of luck to get a parking spot.”
“The Sand Ladder is a relatively steep hike through sand down to the beautiful beach below.”
After hiking nearly 5 miles through the city to get to Baker Beach, we reached the Immigrant Point Overlook. From there we had to descend down the hill along the sand ladder trail. It was the most interesting way I've ever entered a beach in my life. Amazing views and well with the trek.
The Sand Ladder is a relatively steep hike through sand down to the beautiful beach below. It is gorgeous with views of the Pacific the whole way down. Be aware, however, that you will probably need to hike back up, so plan accordingly as it is made almost entirely of sand lined with wooden pillars and thick wire.
Y’all. I’m fat. This Sand Ladder is no joke. Be prepared to wheeze and sweat climbing up the mountain. I think I have given myself bronchitis. While there are places to stop and catch your breath (and the breathtaking views), I felt bad when a 60-year-old lady with a cane was climbing the stairs faster than me.
Would have been a perfect hike - harder for me dragging an overly excited dog and carrying fishing gears. Beautiful view and short cut to the nude side of the beach.
