Confirmed from Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (200 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 9 mentions

“Come near dusk and watch a beautiful sunset from the Gazebo--you won't regret it!”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“We found it to be well marked and had no issue following it.”

👟 good for all levels 4 mentions

“It was an easy hike, didn't quite make it to the waterfall.”

One of the best hikes at Lake George. This is moderate level. We went there when it snowed and didn't have spikes on the shoes. The road was very icy and slippery. It's almost 2 mile hike with moderate steep and slopes. The views are breath taking and totally worth the hike.

Nice hike to gazebo with views of Lake George. Can then continue on trail to waterfall. On day we went the waterfall was running, but not huge. I imagine it is more impressive during winter thaw. Hike is uphill most of the way out, but not overly difficult.

Nice view at the top! Moderate to easy trail to get to the gazebo. Parking for about 10-15 cars. Best to come early to avoid crowds, especially on weekends. Some other nearby mountains have better views of the Lake, but this hike is shorter and easier. Worth a try if in the Lake George area.

It's a quick hike that is 100% all uphill to a nice view..... bring sandwiches or something to do at the top or you will wish you did.... about another 15min past the top is a nice waterfall to check out

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 36 mentions

“Awesome view from there, watched a plane come down for a landing on the lake!”

Plan your run at Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
