Confirmed from Start Of Hiking Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Start Of Hiking Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (55 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“Very easy, short beautiful trail.”

It’s worth it when you get there. The trail is not well marked though so if you are not from the area it can seem confusing. You have to park in the shoulder before you get to the gate. Once you walk in, take the lower walking trail, not the higher rural road.

★★★★★ — Rebekah , Mar 2021

A 15 minute hike through the woods. Park on the west side of the road. Walk on the right side of the gate alongside Seely camp. Every fork, take the right side, pass the fenced in pool. To see the rock, avoid the scramble down the hill, walk to the right down the rocky granite shelf.

★★★★★ — J , Jun 2025

It is a great place for family hiking. I have seen a 3 year old baby hiking this trails with their parents (they have 2 more kids and mom was pregnant, amazing). It is somewhat of an easy trail and there is plenty of nature on this trail.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
