Confirmed from Sugarloaf Mountain Observation Decks' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Scenic observation spot with 360° views of Lake Superior and the surrounding Marquette area.
What runners say about Sugarloaf Mountain Observation Decks
“It was hazy that day but we still got beautiful wide views of the lakeshore & forests around.”
“It's a short and easy, family friendly hike.”
We did the "hard trail." being from Utah, it is interesting and fun to try trails in newspapers areas. Having stairs up a "mountain" was new for me. But I really enjoyed it. It was easy to navigate, although quite muddy and path looked used by a tractor recently. Beautiful views at the top.
There are options for climbing and descending, two levels of difficulty. The easier trail has a lot of boardwalks and stairs, while the more difficult trail has uneven ground, rocks, and roots to avoid.
Moderate trail that seasoned hikers will find easy. Part dirt trail and part wooden stairs. There is a bit of elevation but nothing too bad. Great sunrise spot. The sugarloaf structure is a bit odd but the observation deck is in a prime spot and has an excellent view of Lake Superior.
There's a good reason it's on the short list of places to go in Marquette! Two options for the hike up, one "improved" trail with stairs to make it easier and one "unimproved" trail.
Trail conditions & character
“We parked at the gravel lot which starts you halfway up the improved trail and makes it quite a short trip to a fantastic view at the top!”
“We went on a sunny warm Saturday and many other people had the same idea to climb Sugarloaf.”
“7 mi each way from the North parking lot (slightly closer if you park in the South lot).”
“The easier trail has a lot of boardwalks and stairs, while the more difficult trail has uneven ground, rocks, and roots to avoid.”
“No bathrooms at the parking lot or anywhere in the trail, so be prepared for that.”
