Confirmed from The Military Reserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about The Military Reserve

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (690 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 8 mentions

“A beautiful place to run with incredible trails, there are huge elevation changes so the climbs can be tough but it's worth the view of the city.”

My new favorite trail to walk the dogs! People are super friendly as well. Perfect place to decompress. Bring your water bottle since the water fountain is a hit or miss.

We parked down by the military reserve, but this review is for the trail system itself. This was an unexpected trail-runners dream find! We were looking for some local trails to run on during a short stop-over, and wow! I thought we'd just find some old dusty road. Not so! I had no idea that Boise had these trails.

Ok if you haven't been here, it's about to be your new favorite place in boise. I've been going here with my dog for years and I never tire of it. There's long trails and they all loop together so you can't really get lost, they'll all get you home eventually.

SOoooo much to explore!! Dog trails, bike trails, horse trails.... human trails... well, you get the point! There is literally, a seemingly- never ending system of trails all around, that just beckon you to wander one direction or the other!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
