Confirmed from Vulcan Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Vulcan Trail is a beautiful trail for walking or running (other reviews of the actual trailhead by Vulcan statue/museum deal more with the actual trail). This end of the trail is a bit difficult to find if you are new... up the hill off of Greensprings, kind of between a business and apt building properties.

Vulcan trail is a 2 mile walking/ running path half paved and half gravel. Located close to the UAB campus, it's a good place for a quiet walk and reflection amid nature.

★★★★★ — Srinidhi , Feb 2021

Very nice trail, mostly paved but some with gravel that is easy for walking and is wide enough for biking. It is also stroller and wheelchair accessible. Beautiful views of downtown as well. Walk the length of the trail both ways and you get 4 miles in.

This trail is my serenity prayer place where I come to talk to the Lord and de stress myself from my daily problems.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
