Confirmed from West Desert Trails' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about West Desert Trails

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (12 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

Nice to have a space so close to hike through. Lots of cholla though so be sure to wear the appropriate shoes. I would not recommend bringing a dog due to the cholla, loose cattle and limited shade/cover--I also came face to face with a big rattler on the 337 trail this week, right on the trail about 12 inches infront…

Network of bike & hike trails. Biking is good for beginner to easy/moderate difficulty. For me, easy/moderate means weaving through arroyos over some rocks and around cactus. Except for the arroyos, its pretty flat. Trails are a little sandy in places and you sure don't want to slide out on top of a cactus.

Nice biking and hiking trails. Trails are sandy in places. Lots of desert plant life.

Great get-away from the daily strife just west of Green Valley. Many, many trails that are geared to hiking or biking. Permit required and easily attained thru the website posted on signs.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Flat & fast 2 mentions

“Some trails have loose gravel or slightly steep declines so be prepared and have shoes that grip or take routes appropriate for your fitness level.”

“Some trail markers are currently down or covered by overgrowth, so I'd also recommend using the All Trails App if you aren't familiar with the area.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
