Confirmed from Air Line Trail Colchester's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Former railway line converted to a hiking trail and park that is open to dogs.
What runners say about Air Line Trail Colchester
“People who ride their horses should be forced to clean up their animal mountains of dung.”
“Even strollers work well on these large easy trails”
Very peaceful walk. Nice gravel path. Enough parking at areas. Wish they had some port a potty though.
Good trail, flat in most places, compacted gravel, wide track, lots of parking areas. Just be careful in crossing the roads - there are lots of them on the entire length of the trail.
Great place to walk and ride your bikes or walk your dog. People who ride their horses should be forced to clean up their animal mountains of dung. Not fair to the rest of us.
A wide trail on a former railroad bed. Recent severe rainstorms have rutted the trail in several sections. A great resource for outdoor enthusiasts.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
