Confirmed from Bald Bluff Nature Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

An enjoyable hiking trail with the Bald Bluff Overlook being a scenic stop not far from the trailhead. Once at the overlook we saw a sign for the Stone Elephant and decided to adventure on to that. It was a beautiful fall day and was truly enjoyable.

Climb to the top of this moderately steep but relatively short hill, and you will be treated to panaramic views of the countryside. There are also some longer trails for those who prefer a longer hike.

It was OK. Probably won't do it again. Good: you do get into the woods and it's a good workout. There are LOTS of incredibly beautiful butterflies, large and small (end of July). The trail is very well defined and has yellow blazes.

Best time is deep winter with ice cleats to get the cleanest views and trail to yourself. Best option heading north is to switch over to the horse trail at the prairie opening then come back south on the IAT at Tamarack Rd where all trails meet, again only in winter when trails are vacant.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

“Also, anytime the trail went up or down a hill, it was "paved" with round rocks of various sizes, the kind that love to just roll out from under you and try to break your ankle.”
