Confirmed from Buckskin Cliff Shadows Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Buckskin Cliff Shadows Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (251 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“What a great place for hike, the trails are extensive in beautiful desert terrain.”

🌳 shaded & cool 3 mentions

“No shade, uneven terrain, and includes many bike trails.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“Other then that, nice views, and very peaceful.”

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

Millions of people see this mountain everyday at the end of Cheyenne and most people probably admire it but very few people ever climb it. It looks deceptively close and easy from the city. When you get to it it is anything but. For one thing it is almost impossible to get to.

★★★★★ — Erico , Mar 2025

The trailhead is located between two mountains that lead to a network of interconnected smaller trails. The looping trail is on the side of the mountain which is narrow with dirt and rocks that can get slippery in some sections.

★★★★☆ — Doubled , Dec 2020

To my surprise, this trail is actually not far at all from Lone Mountain....on the opposite side. Bathrooms available, nice parking space, clean. A few interesting caves around. A few trails to choose from.

★★★★☆ — Jo , Oct 2021

Big parking with bathrooms ,nice short hike to the top with great vew of the town

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
