Confirmed from Byrd Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“I brought a blanket and a book to read and enjoyed the quiet and scenery.”

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

“Buffalo yes real live Buffalos, bears, eagles, a perverbial wonderland, family friendly, or just a nice place for a romantic stroll.”

Park seems pretty nice. I came to start to longboard here and realized that the trail is all crushed gravel. There’s a nice set of gym stations around the park, I didn’t try them so can’t really know if they work. Not sure if there is a bathroom on site. Parking on the street for the perimeter looks to be free.

Park was fun. It was pretty, lots of ducks. Good walking spaces. Grandkids wanted to fish but there was a huge amount of green junk in water that prohibited a good experience in that department. Still a beautiful day!

It's a beautiful park with several beautiful, scenic areas that are great for walking or maybe a picnic. The VITA trail is one mile and has different fitness stations along the way. It is a scenic trail with even terrain. I enjoy taking my son out on the trail in his stroller.

A Richmond Va. favorite please come visit if you're in town. This park has an area called the Japanese Garden and it is an awesome place to behold. An exercise track one mile long and a zoo next to it.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Byrd Park

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
