Confirmed from Canal Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Canal Trail
“rolling hills paved trail - can get crowded - some speedsters on bikes - very scenic”
The canal trail has always been a great experience for my wife and I. We have used the trail for many years and in doing so ,we have always met friendly patrons. We take our grandchildren with us and they too are always thrilled to attend.
Great trail for a early morning walk. Lots of wildlife and scenic views. Word of caution though, some bike riders and skateboarders are recklessly fast
Canal Path Park is great for strolling around with your dog or friends. There's a long trail just passed the dog park, which is across the street.
Excellent walking trail along the rappahannock River...scenic views...accessible from several different spits in Fredericksburg

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
