Confirmed from Castle Rock State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Stopped at the overlook on my road trip for a little fresh air and to stretch my legs—was not disappointed! The drive was very pretty, I was the only car in the parking lot, and the run up the stairs to that view was exhilarating.

This review is mostly just on the scenic overlook area of Castle Rock. There were other park entrances but chose this one because i didn't do a lot of hiking and i packed everything but the bug spray! The park is nice, clean, free, and plenty of parking.

★★★★☆ — Yana , Aug 2017

Beautiful scenic overlook of the Rock River with a well constructed staircase of 147 steps with a few boardwalks to space out the steps off the left side of the parking lot near the entrance, another nice overlook on the right side of the parking lot off the river.

★★★★★ — Dawn , Oct 2025

Clean, well maintained park. Beautiful river. Saw pack of wild turkeys. The scenic overlook off route 2 was a good view. Did anyone lose a kitty backpack? Found at the River landing on route 2.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 45 mentions

“The park offers beautiful scenic views, peaceful hiking trails, and access to the river for kayaking, fishing, or just relaxing by the water.”
