Confirmed from Hillside Natural Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Beautiful views of the Bay Area with scenic benches and a walking path. Tons of deer at twilight, plus owls, coyotes, and I even saw a Bobcat here once!

★★★★★ — Brett , Mar 2023

It is good place for hiking and we can see views from the height and its a amazing place.

★★★★★ — Laxmi , May 2022

We love this trail! The gradual up climb is just enough to make us feel exuberant. We enjoy the view of El Cerrito and the Bay. The signs along the trail are educational. The natural benches are not only functional but also beautiful.

★★★★★ — Lina , Feb 2021

Little slice of El Cerrito heaven, mountain views, and panoramic haven of the Bay. Bring poop bags for your pups, mostly good boys and girls off leash, clearly marked trails, not too intense or easy. Love it. Plus many access points from suburban areas to right by the recycling plant.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
