Confirmed from Monte Vista Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

It's a great place to take your dog or go for a hike with a friend! There are lots of trails/loops that go on for miles. There are part's of the trail that are shaded and there is access to Folsom lake! When I went in May there were lots of wildflowers!

Sunday April 6th 8:30am, parking lot not full, did not see any signs stating a parking fee. Nice pretty easy trail. Some wildflowers lots of Butterflys. Well kept, nothing wrong with it but nothing spectacular either. Mix of shady and exposed areas.

★★★★☆ — Nick , Apr 2025

Gravel parking lot is super easy to identify from the road. No lights or restrooms at the trailhead. Cell phone service is good. Hikes range from easy to moderate. The trails are maintained, signage on the trail is ok. Hiked the Monte Vista Inner Loop -Some of the trail overlooks the water, which was nice.

★★★★☆ — Adrienne , Aug 2021

Great little hike, water was very low on our visit so we got to explore parts that would normally be 50ft under water. Kids loved it, muddy, lots of good mini game trails to get off the beaten path and really feel like your in a forest.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
