Confirmed from Mount Tabor - Stairs' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Mount Tabor - Stairs

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (593 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Maybe not quite as scenic as the trails, but still well shaded.”

A dormant volcano in southeast Portland creates the perfect place to look down hawthorn street and have views of the city. Lots of lovely trails to hike around and playgrounds for kids.

★★★★★ — Jordan , Jun 2020

As a connoisseur of fine stairs these are hard to beat. Hidden away in dense woods with plenty of of shade. Lots of ambitious climbers wearing weighted vests. And there are enough stairs here to satisfy the fittest of the fit. Plenty of street parking at the bottom and two blocks from a cute coffee shop and bakery.

★★★★★ — Jon , Aug 2025

I love walking the stairs at Mt Tabor and then admiring the views at the top.

★★★★★ — Sue , Nov 2025

Strange to give a review for stairs, but I wish I'd known about them sooner so I'll share! They are a great way to get to the top of Tabor fairly quickly. Maybe not quite as scenic as the trails, but still well shaded.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
