Confirmed from Kelly Butte Natural Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Kelly Butte Natural Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (437 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“But it was pretty much empty here when I went and it was beautiful and tranquil.”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 3 mentions

“Dog friendly so being a leash, we saw 2 other dogs during our walk.”

Good for a quick hike, decent uphill section from the east. Ivy control is managed and it's a worthwhile place to keep after it. *CAUTION: TANK ACCESS LIDS AND SEWER DRAINAGE LIDS WERE OPEN ON THE EAST SIDE.

★★★★☆ — Jeff , Jan 2025

A bit of a walk up the hill to the old parking area. There are no facilities at this park. Great for a quick walk in the woods. We have even got to encounter coyotes some mornings.

★★★★☆ — Chris , Oct 2020

The forest is full of many routes, for people hiking infrequently make sure to take notice of the surrounding as well keeping a sense of direction. There’s a place to park the car near the entrance

Great place, bit of walking to the old hill and a retired cold war military bunker

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🐕 Dog-friendly 11 mentions

“Coyotes sunbathe in the upper pasture, but if you don't leash your dog, coyotes got skill.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
