Confirmed from Mt. Tabor Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Large forested park covering an extinct volcano with tennis courts, a playground & 360-degree views.
What runners say about Mt. Tabor Park
“The mix of activity, nature, and gorgeous views makes it one of Portland’s best spots to just hang out and take it all in.”
“It’s a really calm and peaceful environment, not to mention the basketball court surrounded by trees, tennis courts, and playground.”
“It's a super family friendly place.”
This was mine and my husband's first time at this park and we really enjoyed it! It was beautiful. LOTS of trails to enjoy. Those stairs are unforgiving as heck 🤣. It's definitely a busier park, but with how many trails there are, everyone is spaced out, and everyone we ran into was very nice.
The best park I've ever gone to by far. I've been going here since I was 5 years old, and nearly 20 years later, traveling all over the place, I can confidently say this. From the beautiful view at the top, to the ethereal trees all over the place, you will never get bored here.
This park is on a mountain with pretty steep elevation, so if you're not ready to climb, I would suggest just driving up and parking the car by the street and climbing from the reservoir area. It's much easier.
On an extremely hot day, I sought shade in the forest and found this perfect spot to walk my dogs and cool off beneath the deep, leafy canopy. It’s a wonderful place to escape the heat. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a tranquil space right in the middle of the city.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
