We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Tackapausha Nature Preserve yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Tackapausha Nature Preserve
“Nice trails, quiet, birds, not crowded.”
Tons of wildlife can be spotted here! I saw Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Hummingbirds, Sea Gulls, Cardinals, Robins, Ducks and then there’s Geese haha. A short trail that is looped in the lower part of the preserve near the museum. You can park your car at the museum and take the trail that starts behind the museum!
An amazing place (84 acres) with ponds, streams, swampy areas, many different trees, mammals and birds. Just a beautiful experience! Take the kids or just walk to clear your head. Mostly wooded - nicely shaded in summer. Also has a museum on location with special Saturday presentation. Fee to get into museum ($3-$5).
A hidden gem on long islands south side. Nice trails, quiet, birds, not crowded. To do the whole hike will take about 2 hrs and you do have to cross 2 streets.
This place is a little gem! I expect most people only visit the pond at the lower/southern end of the preserve, but there are lots of trails winding through the area. The pond usually has an assortment of waterfowl (especially geese) and is a good place to see herons and terns fishing.
Trail conditions & character
“No facilities and mostly inaccessible for the mobility-impaired, aside from the southern end.”
