We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Butterfield Canyon yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Mountainous destination for hiking and biking, plus camping.
What runners say about Butterfield Canyon
“Beautiful place to day camp, hike, dirt bike, or just throw up a hammock and take a long nap”
Here you'll find some of the best biking and hiking trails in Herriman. The trails are well packed and berms are high. Although most trails have no restrictions on the use of horses, I personally recommend AGAINST horse riding here...narrow trails.
I love driving up Butterfield canyon, especially to see the leaves during the fall. I have brought multiple friends/family/clients to various spots to take pictures and they always turn out great.
Fun place to bike! Lots of nice trails, and looks like they're continuing to improve it.
This is a really nice option on the west side of the valley. Appropriate for walking, biking or hiking. There is trail that goes along the river on the south side of the road. That’s only for the the few first miles.
Trail conditions & character
“The view to either side is spectacular and the memories you'll create with your family will be the best ones to come.”
“Rare care when driving all the way to the top (as others have mentioned), as the road is really narrow and right along the mountain (steep drop off with no guard rails).”
“With the new parking lot this trail head really stands out against the competition.”
