Confirmed from Gaviota Peak Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Gaviota Peak Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (171 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“It's a quick 5 mins walk to the sulphur springs, but the setting is beautiful and shaded.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“We went on a Wednesday and only saw one other hiker, it was really peaceful and remote.”

Going counterclockwise is the best way to go, and if you are not using AllTrails to guide you, it's easy to miss the left turn off the main trail to the wind caves for the full loop, finishing off with the "hot springs" (more like lukewarm springs).

★★★★★ — Timber , Jan 2022

Make sure to come prepared! The peak is a pretty intense hike, especially if you go up the direction the hot spring is at. I'd recommend going to the right when the path breaks off (towards tunnel view) and take the trail straight up to the peak!

★★★★★ — Desi , Jul 2019

Really fun trail to hike to the peak, it can feel steep in places but it’s not technical. There’s no water on the route, so travel prepared. We went on a Wednesday and only saw one other hiker, it was really peaceful and remote.

★★★★★ — Nicola , Oct 2019

It's taken a bit of a hit from Fire Services making some room to deal with the recent fire down on the 101. There are portions in disarray due to this, with wood debris strewn across what used to be a one person wide trail on Trespass. Still, beautiful hike with great views of the ocean.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
