Confirmed from Tomahawk Natural Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Nature preserve with kid-friendly hiking, and mountain biking trails.
What runners say about Tomahawk Natural Area
“Offers some great views if you are willing and able to traverse the sometimes steep and unstable gravely trails!”
“Not that much shade (at least on the Avenue Twin Peaks trail), so lots of water + hats/sunglasses are recommended on hot sunny days!”
The historic lime kiln structure is a great point of interest. It's only a few hundred yards from the trailhead. Luckily, this particular trailhead hasn't been usurped by the locals (No Parking signs everywhere) like many other trailheads in affluent neighbors.
We loved this trail! Took 4 children up it and there were parts that were a bit steep and slippery with the shoes we had, but we made it up holding hands and some of the children made it down sliding on their bottoms! It took us to a bike trail which was much more easily navigated.
This area has my favorite hiking spot, Avenue Twin Peaks, and so many more. Beautiful views, beautiful neighborhood. You definitely need to visit as often as possible, have a picnic, take a hike, go mountain biking, or even trail running. You won't be disappointed.

“Many of the trails in this area, that lead up to Bonneville Shoreline Trail or Twin Peaks, are steep, exposed, and consist mostly of loose rock and dirt.”
“Not that much shade (at least on the Avenue Twin Peaks trail), so lots of water + hats/sunglasses are recommended on hot sunny days!”
“It's only a few hundred yards from the trailhead.”
“In the spring, it's pretty muddy, and in the winter the snow gets compacted and icy from hikers and fat bikes.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says

- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
