Mixed-Surface Trails

More than one surface along the same route — most often a greenway that starts paved through town and turns to crushed stone once it leaves, or a paved loop with dirt spurs branching off it. Mixed-surface trails are a convenient way to get the variety that is easiest on your legs without driving to two places. The one thing to do is check the segment you actually plan to run: which surface you get can depend entirely on which trailhead you start from, so pick your shoes for the majority of your route.

2,904 trails in this directory have a mixed surface — most of them in Ohio, Florida, California. Surface comes from each trail's own description, its website and what runners say in reviews; long trails can change surface partway, so check the segment you plan to run.

The other surfaces

Worth knowing: the honest answer to which surface is best for your legs is more than one of them, so it pays to keep a route on each.

Paved & Asphalt Trails

5,093 trails

Asphalt or concrete — fast, predictable, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and runnable year-round.

Crushed Limestone & Gravel Trails

615 trails

Crushed limestone or packed gravel — the rail-trail classic. Softer than pavement, still smooth enough for tempo runs.

Natural-Surface & Dirt Trails

3,204 trails

Dirt and singletrack — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain.

Boardwalk Trails

1,080 trails

Elevated wood decking, usually over wetlands or dunes. Scenic, flat, and can get slick when wet.
